R&B and Hip Hop stole the night.

The 35th ARIA Awards were on last night in Sydney – live-streamed on YouTube from Taronga Zoo – and it was the first time that gender-based awards were made redundant.

So instead of a Male and Female category - it was melded into one - The Best Artist of the Year.

Drumroll, please...

Best Artist went to The Kid Laroi who beat out Keith Urban, Tones & I, Kylie Minogue, Vance Joy, and Amy Shark.

Amy Shark was nominated for six awards but unfortunately went home empty-handed, yet still managed to deliver a beautiful performance of her single Love Songs Ain't For Us.

History was made with independent hip-hop artist Genesis Owusu - who took out 4 awards, including Best Hip Hop Album, Best Independent Release & the big one - Best Album of the Year for Smiling with No Teeth – the first time a hip hop album has ever won in this category.

Massive Congratulations!!

Genesis Owusu also performed a medley of his hits on the night.

Song of the Year went to Perth group Spacey Jane for their hit single Booster Seat.

One of the highlights of the evening was seeing the incredibly talented 19-year-old First Nations artist Budjerah winning Michael Gudinski's Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award, presented by Ed Sheeran.

Budjerah was endearingly overwhelmed with emotion, which translated straight through the screen into our hearts.

And we can see why he was the recipient of such an honourable award.

Check out his beautiful vocals. Stunning!
