A 34-year-old man has been arrested after a police chase south of Perth.

Police spotted a vehicle of interest on Coolbellup Avenue in Coolbellup around 8.45pm on Sunday.

Officers tried to stop the car as it turned onto Forrest Road, but the driver allegedly failed to stop and continued driving at slow speed .

The Police Air Wing tracked the vehicle as it travelled south through several suburbs before the driver allegedly abandoned it on the South Western Highway.

He allegedly fled on foot into a property on the eastern side of the highway and while running through a paddock he was chased by a herd of cattle.

The driver started to struggle when he encountered some steep terrain and was arrested by police a short time later.

The 34-year-old White Gum Valley man has been charged with several offences unrelated to the police chase.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court today.

"It is expected he will be charged with further offences in relation to the evade police incident," a WA Police spokesperson said.
