Wearable Art Mandurah is back for 2021, ready to amaze and delight audiences with handmade, revolutionary works of art on the body.

With the premier arts event put on hold in 2020 due to COVID-19, local, national and international designers have been working hard through the 2021 competition, and are putting the finishing touches on garments for a showstopping display of creativity at this year’s live judging events.

For the first time in Wearable Art Mandurah history, the garment judging event will be open to the public, giving people a sneak peek into the judging process and a first-hand look at close to 90 garments created for this year’s competition. The judging days will be held on August 27 and 28 at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

The categories to be judged include Paper, Black and White, Migration, Avant Garde, Tertiary and Youth.

Professional judges will see the garments one-by-one, and select winners in each category, as well as special prizes such as Artist of the Year and Creative Reuse. The awards will be announced at the Wearable Art Mandurah Showcase event in November.

Wearable Art Mandurah is a year-long program, including the highlight Showcase event where professional models will present the finalist garments in a dynamic, spectacular performance, as part of the 2021 Mandurah Arts Festival (October 29 – November 7).

Selected garments will also be featured in a number of exhibitions including In the Fold, an exhibition of the Paper category garments in the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery from November 5-27, and the annual Wearable Art Mandurah exhibition at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah from February 18 – April 10, 2022. These exhibitions provide an exciting opportunity for the public to get up close to the amazing artworks and see
them in all their detailed glory.

From the 158 initial entries into the competition, 86 garments have been chosen to appear in Wearable Art Mandurah’s judging events over three sessions. Each garment will be professionally styled and modelled by models from Metro Agency, giving people an opportunity to preview these amazing garments in action before the Showcase.
