Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie has put the Premier on notice after ambulance ramping at Peel Health Campus reached a grim new record last month.

September figures show ramping peaked at 560.5 hours – up more than 179 hours from the previous month.

Mr Hastie said enough is enough.

“Our local hospital is at the heart of our healthcare, especially for those of us living in Mandurah. And for the last five years, we have been let down by a state Labor Government that has failed to deliver,” Mr Hastie said.

“Residents in Canning have been telling me how bad the situation is at Peel Health Campus – it is now the worst on record.

“Think of it like this: for more than 18 hours every day of the month, there is an emergency patient waiting in an ambulance outside our hospital, unable to get inside for the treatment they need."

Mr Hastie said Mr McGowan has let the people of the Peel region down.

“The Premier is more than happy to boast about his $6 billion surplus but refuses to put his hand in his pocket when it comes to our health system," he said.

“We need more than lip service from the Premier. We need action.”

A spokesperson for Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said ambulance ramping cannot be fixed overnight.

“We always said it would take time to reduce ramping while challenged by winter demand, staff furloughing, sick leave, and COVID-19 infection control protocols, which has only recently begun easing at hospitals," the spokesperson said.

“The Morrison Liberal Government had nine years to deliver for the people of Peel and they failed dismally.

“The State Government has secured $152 million to expand and redevelop the Peel Health Campus and the planning process for that is underway.

“Last year an upgraded emergency department at Peel Health Campus opened, and other improvements were made including an expanded car park and increased security at the hospital.”

The hospital will switch from private to public sector management in 2023.
