Australia will have a one-off public holiday on Thursday September 22 to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement on Sunday calling the holiday a "National Day of Mourning".

"It will be a one-off national public holiday to allow people to pay their respects for the passing of Queen Elizabeth," Mr Albanese told the ABC.

The Queen's funeral will be held in London on Monday, September 19.
