A missing dog has been reunited with its owner in Safety Bay after police retrieved it from a stranger's home.

Max the Bull Terrier escaped from his backyard sometime between 10pm on Monday and 6am on Tuesday.

His owner Maddie Higgins took to the streets to search for him as well as asking for the public's help on social media.

Later on Tuesday, a woman had commented on one of her posts saying a black and white dog had been handed into BWS in Shoalwater.

"I've gone straight to BWS and asked them 'have you seen this dog' and showed them (the staff member) a photo of Max and she confirmed 'yes that's definitely the dog and he's already been picked up by someone',"

"I started freaking out, I said 'well I'm his owner'.

"Some random has come and picked him up claiming to be his owner."

Ms Higgins said the staff member knew who took the dog but did not give out their details due to their "privacy policy" so instead she called the police for assistance.

"The police went to this person's house, got Max, and brought him home around 9pm that night," she said.

"These people had given him a bath and had a vet appointment booked for him the next day."

Ms Higgins said she was just glad to have him back and was not sure if the person who picked him up was doing so out of good faith or if they had planned to keep him.

"I'm just so happy he's home and he wasn't out in the rain," she said.

"I'm happy he was at someone's house getting pampered...I would just like to know who these people are so I can at least thank them."

It is understood no criminality was involved and police will not lay charges.
