The City of Rockingham’s extensive efforts to save water through the Waterwise Council Program have been recognised, with the City recently receiving re-endorsement as a Gold Waterwise Council.

The program is administered by Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Endorsement as a Gold Waterwise Council recognises the City’s ongoing achievements in sustainable water management and for its commitment to building waterwise communities.

The City was endorsed as a Waterwise Council in 2017, and first received recognition as a Gold Waterwise Council in 2019.

To achieve re-endorsement as a Gold Waterwise Council the City is required to report on the goals of its 2021 Waterwise Council Action Plan.

Key actions in the last reporting period include:

-    Reducing the City’s potable corporate water usage by 3,056 kilolitres.

-    Planting 15,000 trees since 2017 through the City’s Greening Plan.

-    Delivering the annual Native Plants Giveaway event, with thousands of free seedlings provided to residents to help them establish water wise gardens.

-    Improving leak detection and repairs to water lines and irrigation systems at the City’s biggest water consuming sites.

-    Removing iron build-up from bores across City reserves, resulting in better performance and reduced water consumption.

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said planning for future generations through sensible climate change adaptation initiatives was a strategic objective for the City.

“Our climate is evolving and the City proactively looks at the ways it can reduce water consumption to ensure it maintains its status as a Gold Waterwise Council,” Mayor Hamblin said.

“The City acknowledges and understands the impacts of climate change, and water conservation plays a crucial part in continuing to develop a sustainable, liveable community.

“Achieving re-endorsement as a Gold Waterwise Council is a reflection of these efforts and the City gratefully acknowledges Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental for the recognition.”
