Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the City of Rockingham’s draft master plan for the Warnbro Community Recreation Centre (WCRC).

The Master Plan sets out the direction for long-term development of the facility, should funding for the project be made available by Council in years to come.

The WCRC, located on Okehampton Road in Warnbro, has served the community as a key sporting and recreation facility since 1979. It features a main hall with a full size basketball court, a multipurpose room, playgroup room, kitchen and change rooms.

In addition to the many regular hirers, the facility is also home to the Warnbro Swans Football and Sporting Association, which plays AFL and cricket on the adjoining Warnbro Recreation Reserve throughout the winter and summer sporting seasons.

Key elements of the new draft Master Plan include increasing parking at the facility, improving accessibility, enhancing storage and revising the building layout to reduce overlap between sporting club areas and hireable community spaces.

A new first aid room, updates to the sports hall, refurbishment of the change rooms and conversion of the group fitness room to a multipurpose room are featured.

On the reserve the City is proposing to deliver an accessible footpath and ramp, additional parking on Currie and Street and Oakehampton Road, new spectator shelters, and relocation of the cricket nets.

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said the Master Plan would provide a clear vision and direction for the future use of the centre.

“At its ordinary meeting on 28 February Council approved the draft Master Plan for public comment, and we strongly encourage community members to share their thoughts,” Mayor Hamblin said.

“Growing and nurturing community connectedness and wellbeing, and planning for future generations are aspirations in our Strategic Community Plan – and the draft Master Plan aligns with these.

“Following community consultation the Master Plan will be updated and returned to Council for final consideration. While funding for this project is not currently in the Business Plan, Council will be requested to make a decision on funding the implementation of the Master Plan in the future.”
