The City of Mandurah will hold a Special Council Meeting this week to consider the next steps in the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) roof replacement project.
Councillors will discuss whether to accept a quote of $6.7 million for the design and construction of the roof above the 25-metre indoor pool, which has been out of use since May 2021.
The insurance claim for the repair has been accepted by the insurer, but the final settlement amount may not be known for several months.
Despite this, Council is being asked to approve the full quote knowing the insurance settlement amount is yet to be recovered.
In November 2021, the City committed $2.5 million to the project.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said the City was working hard to get the roof replacement underway, however the process had been difficult given the WA construction industry was still under immense pressure.
“The roof replacement is a highly complex construction process, and coupled with the current challenges in the building industry, there have been many hurdles we’ve had to overcome to progress this project,” Mr Newman said.
“Council will be considering its options in this project this week, working towards having the indoor pool back open for the community as soon as possible.”
If Council approves the quote, a timeline for the replacement works and re-opening of the 25m pool will be confirmed.
Council will also consider approving the installation of acoustic improvements to the Leisure Pool for an estimated contract price of $292,400.
