Mark McGowan will step down as Western Australia's Premier and the Member for Rockingham.

Mr McGowan made the announcement during a press conference held a short time ago.

“The truth is, I’m tired, extremely tired. In fact, I’m exhausted,” McGowan said.

"I just don't have the energy or drive to continue in the role as Premier."

He was elected Premier in 2017 and has been the Member for Rockingham since 1996.

Mr McGowan will officially leave Parliament at the end of the week.

Possible contenders for the top job include Deputy Premier Roger Cook and Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.
